Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Warns About AI: Could Humanity Need a “Pause Button”?

Artificial intelligence is advancing at an extraordinary pace. AI systems can already generate software, images and videos, analyze enormous datasets and perform increasingly complex tasks with limited human intervention. But as AI becomes more powerful, an important question is becoming harder to ignore: What happens if technological development moves faster than humanity's ability to control it? Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has repeatedly discussed this problem and has proposed an unusual safeguard: humanity may eventually need the ability to temporarily slow down extremely powerful AI development.

🤖 Buterin's Idea of a “Soft Pause”

Buterin has explored the possibility of creating what could effectively function as a global "soft pause" mechanism for industrial-scale AI computing.

In a January 2025 proposal, he discussed a scenario in which available global computing power for the most advanced AI systems could temporarily be reduced dramatically, potentially by around 90% to 99% for one or two years, if humanity entered a critical period where superintelligent AI appeared dangerously close.

The objective would not be to destroy AI or permanently stop technological progress.

It would be to buy time.

Governments, researchers and technology companies could potentially use that time to improve AI safety, cybersecurity, governance and defensive technologies before allowing development to accelerate again.

Importantly, Buterin has presented such extreme intervention as something closer to a last-resort mechanism, rather than something that should automatically be activated today.

⚠️ Why Is He Concerned?

The fundamental concern involves increasingly capable AI systems eventually exceeding human capabilities in important areas.

If an AI system became sufficiently intelligent to outperform humans in areas such as cybersecurity, scientific research, persuasion, strategic planning and software development, controlling such a system could become extremely difficult.

Buterin takes these existential risks seriously, although his position is more nuanced than simply declaring that AI should be stopped.

In a 2025 discussion about superintelligent AI, he argued that if timelines toward advanced AI become dangerously short, some form of pause could become necessary.

At the same time, he has previously expressed skepticism about attempting to stop AI progress completely, partly because enforcing a worldwide ban would be extraordinarily difficult and could create geopolitical problems if some countries participated while others continued development.

🛡️ d/acc: Buterin's Alternative to Blind Acceleration

One of Buterin's most interesting ideas is something he calls d/acc, defensive, decentralized, democratic and differential acceleration.

Instead of accelerating every technology as quickly as possible, the idea is to prioritize technologies that make humanity safer and more resilient.

That could include stronger cybersecurity, privacy technologies, decentralized systems and defenses against biological threats.

The philosophy represents a middle ground between two extremes:

“Accelerate everything” and “stop technological progress.”

Buterin instead argues for accelerating technologies that strengthen human defense and decentralization while treating potentially dangerous technologies much more carefully.

⛓️ What Does Blockchain Have to Do With AI?

This discussion is particularly relevant to the blockchain community.

One of blockchain's fundamental principles is that important infrastructure should not depend entirely on a single company, government or central authority.

AI presents almost the opposite possibility.

Training the world's most powerful AI models requires enormous amounts of computing infrastructure, capital and data. This creates the possibility that advanced AI becomes concentrated among a relatively small number of governments and corporations.

Buterin's emphasis on decentralization raises an important question:

Should humanity's most powerful future technology be controlled by only a handful of organizations?

Blockchain cannot magically solve AI safety. But decentralized governance, cryptographic verification, privacy technology and open protocols could potentially contribute to systems that distribute power more broadly.

🌍 The Debate Is Becoming More Urgent

Buterin is certainly not alone in worrying about advanced AI.

In June 2026, AI company Anthropic publicly called for leading AI laboratories to develop a coordinated and verifiable mechanism for pausing development if risks become sufficiently serious. The company specifically raised concerns about increasingly autonomous systems and the possibility of AI eventually helping build its own successors.

This shows how dramatically the debate has evolved.

AI safety is no longer simply a science-fiction discussion.

Researchers, governments, AI companies and technology leaders are now debating how society could respond if increasingly powerful AI begins developing faster than existing safety mechanisms.

🚀 Progress, But With a Safety Mechanism

Vitalik Buterin's position should therefore not be simplified to “stop AI now.”

His argument is more interesting than that.

AI could deliver enormous benefits to medicine, science, education and economic productivity. But humanity should also build defensive mechanisms before they are desperately needed.

The same technological philosophy that helped inspire decentralized blockchain networks could therefore become increasingly relevant to artificial intelligence:

Don't blindly trust one powerful authority. Build systems that remain secure even when something goes wrong.

AI development will probably continue.

The bigger question is whether humanity can develop the safety mechanisms, decentralized infrastructure and international cooperation necessary to remain in control as machines become increasingly capable.

And perhaps Buterin's most important message is simple:

We shouldn't wait until we lose control before deciding that we needed a pause button.
