The Strange Discoveries in Psychedelic Mushrooms: What We Hadn’t Seen Before 🍄
Psilocybin Apparently Evolved Twice
One of the most remarkable discoveries concerns how mushrooms learned to produce psilocybin.
A 2025 study published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition demonstrated that mushrooms from the genera Psilocybe and Inocybe use fundamentally different sets of enzymes and biochemical reaction sequences to manufacture the same molecule: psilocybin.
Researchers concluded that the ability evolved independently at least twice,an unusual example of convergent evolution in fungal natural-product biosynthesis.
Why would evolution repeatedly favor psilocybin?
Scientists do not yet know.
Possible ecological functions include interactions with insects, microorganisms, predators, or other organisms in the mushrooms' environments. However, these explanations remain hypotheses rather than established facts.
The discovery is particularly interesting for biotechnology because two independent biosynthetic systems provide researchers with different enzymes and biochemical strategies for producing psilocybin and potentially related compounds.
New Psychedelic Mushrooms Are Still Being Discovered
We have not even catalogued all the psychedelic mushrooms on Earth.
In 2024, researchers described two previously unknown Psilocybe species from southern Africa: Psilocybe ingeli and Psilocybe maluti.
Their discovery brought the number of known Psilocybe species indigenous to Africa to six, while approximately 140 species had been described worldwide at the time. Researchers believe additional African species probably remain undocumented.
That means the genetic and chemical diversity of psychedelic fungi may still contain surprises.
Could Psilocybin Influence Biological Aging?
Perhaps the most unexpected development came from research published in npj Aging in July 2025.
Researchers found that psilocin, the active metabolite of psilocybin, extended the replicative lifespan of human fibroblast cells in laboratory experiments. In aged female mice, monthly psilocybin treatment was also associated with higher survival during the ten-month experiment: 80% of treated mice survived compared with 50% of control animals.
The cellular experiments also identified changes involving oxidative stress, telomere preservation and markers associated with cellular senescence.
But an important warning is necessary: this does not prove that psilocybin slows aging or extends lifespan in humans. These findings are early laboratory and animal results, and substantially more research is required.
The Biggest Mystery May Still Be Ahead
We still do not know why mushrooms evolved psilocybin, how many undiscovered psychedelic species exist, or what other biologically active molecules they contain.
Perhaps the strangest discovery is therefore not one particular molecule.
It is realizing how much about psychedelic mushrooms we still do not understand. 🍄🔬
