Step 1Open the tool. There is nothing to install, and it keeps working without internet.

Step 2Pick the type first: it decides the shape and the standard finishing. A beach flag slides over a pole and gets a sleeve; a mast flag hangs on eyelets; a pennant chain is triangles on a rope.

Step 3Choose a size, or type your own measurements in centimetres.

Step 4Choose the fabric. This is the decision that settles the back of the flag: knitted polyester lets the print through, a build with a blockout layer does not. It also decides the weight, and a heavy flag needs more wind to fly.

Step 5A beach flag is not a rectangle. You design on the rectangle, because that is how it is printed, but the flag shape lies over your design so you see what the knife takes away while you are still working. The green box is what survives the cut.

Step 6Next to your design you see the back of the flag: mirrored and faded, exactly as someone standing on the other side will see it. That is not a fault in your file, it is how the fabric works. A logo usually looks fine mirrored, a phone number does not.

Step 7Type your text, pick a font and a colour, and place it on the design.

Step 8The check pulls it together: how much shows through the back, the largest rectangle that fits inside the shape with your margin, and how many metres come off the fabric roll. For a pennant chain it counts how many fit on the rope and how much fabric that is.

Step 9The price works itself out while you design. You can change the rates yourself.
